Project Background

Estimates are that 250 people die every hour of every day due to drinking contaminated water. Most of these fatalities are children.

Many of us take a drink of water for granted. We forget that there are vast areas of this world that have insufficient supplies of water of any sort. For people living there, contaminated vs. clean water is not a choice. They often have no other option.

There are ways of manufacturing inexpensive water filters that provide sufficient drinking and cooking water for an entire family.  The water is 99.6% free of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and cysts. A filter lasts for 30 - 40 years. There is nothing else to buy once it is set up and running. The only requirement is to remember to pour in water every day. The only maintenance required is to clean it once every quarter or so.

Sound too good to be true?  It works!  It uses the oldest technology available - bacteria.  We can get into specifics later, but the method is called a Bio-Sand process.  The naturally occurring bacteria living in the sand inside the filter devour anything else that tries to get through.  The result is clean water and healthier people.

So, does saving a few lives sound like a good week's work?  Join us and find out

Additional Information:
This is a two-week trip. The first week is spent working and teaching, and the second week is reserved for touring Peru.  You will explore many of the wonders the Incas left behind including the ancient capital of the Incas, Cusco, the Spanish Cathedral, the Sun Temple, Sacsayhuaman, many other ruins, and, of course, Machu Picchu.  It will be a trip you won't forget.

Special Requirements/Qualifications/Skills Needed: A flexible attitude and a willingness to get your hands dirty working with concrete are all that is necessary.  We will teach you all you need to know and will provide all the materials necessary, too.  This isn't the most glamorous work, but the results are incredible.
